April Fools, when done well, is a great way to be both tantalized and entertained. Like most good things, my first great April Fools memory comes from NPR.
I was living in Boston in 1998. On April 1st, I was driving home from work listening to All Things Considered. Noah Adams narrated a story about the Boston Celtics changing the pronunciation of the team name to use a hard 'C' in order to get agreement to sign an Irish 7'2" player from Trinity College. It also involved allowing him to make the sign of the cross before making free throws. That evening I managed to call numerous friends back home before I realized that I had been fooled!
NPR has an archive of the stories so you can still listen to it at NPR All Things Considered April Fools 1998. They do an April Fools story every year so I can't wait to hear what it is in 2009.
Expedia is joining in the April Fools bandwagon this year by offering Flights to Mars. It's a pretty cool microsite that sparks the imagination and makes you chuckle at the same time. The trip involves a slingshot around the moon and a wormhole to make the time involved manageable. I hope it comes true one day!
And if you explore it enough, you can get your very own Mars Badge:
