We spent this past weekend in Chicago, with the highlight being a dinner at the kitchen table at Charlie Trotter’s. Tee flew in from London, Troy from Seattle, Michael from Washington DC, and Meg and Beth from San Francisco.
But in a completely random event unrelated to dinner, we were roaming the streets of Chicago during the day Saturday, and stopped to get some popcorn at a popcorn store that had amazing smells emanating. Not to be disappointed, Tee got caramel popcorn and Beth wanted to try some. But rather than just handing her the bag, I thought it was a good idea to have her open her mouth, stand about two feet away from me, and see if I could throw the popcorn into her mouth. Well, I missed and the popcorn flew past Beth and hit the woman passing on the sidewalk behind her. The woman stopped and looked at me. I froze and looked back at her. And then in unison, she said “Terry?” and I said “Lisa?” and she’s one of my co-workers from London who was in Chicago for her birthday. How is that even remotely possible that it happened?
Dinner! The kitchen table at Charlie Trotter’s is well known for its prominent placement in the kitchen. They only have two seatings each night and you have no menu from which to order (because menus are so yesterday). Instead, the chef whips up whatever seems to be the best combination of fresh meat, vegetables, fish, and other ingredients. It was a 14 course meal and we opted for the wine pairing along with each course, so we had quite a jovial evening. We even managed to make it through the night without so much as one broken wine glass – and that’s saying something given that we had about 5 wine glasses per person on the table at various moments of the evening!
Verdict: Highly recommend a visit to Charlie Trotter’s in Chicago for a fantastic dinner. If you can reserve several months in advance, splurge on the Kitchen Table. This was Troy and my second time sitting there (we had the same table about 6 years ago!) and it was amazing again. Complete set of pictures are available on the Facebook Chicago Photo Album page.
