We took Troy's mom to Rome for a weekend in April when she was visiting us. It's pretty amazing that you can fly to Rome for a weekend with no time off, and still pack in a ton of sightseeing and activities.
We stayed at the Sofitel Roma. The hotel was nice, but the area was a bit quiet. But it's still probably a decent location, since we could walk to more activity, but weren't disturbed by it needlessly.
We had a relaxing weekend - arrived late Friday and woke up Saturday and found a local cafe where we grabbed breakfast. The cafe was near a bus stop with several of the open air bus tours around the city, so we hopped onto one of those after breakfast, and had a decent overview around Rome. Why is it on every similar bus tour I've ever taken that the headphones NEVER seem to work? This was no different, so I think Troy didn't get much help with the guided portion of the tour. Almost the last stop was the Vatican / St. Peter's Square, so we hopped off there.
When we had wandered around Saint Peter's Square a little, an English tour group was just starting, so we joined up with them and had an unexpectedly great tour for the next few hours - all through the square, then the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, and it ended right at St. Peters. Some of the pictures in the Vatican Museum are beautiful, and if all goes well, we'll be using one of them for our Christmas card this year. We went into St. Peter's ourselves and also through the crypt, where not only St. Peter himself is supposed to be buried, but also Pope John Paul II (where there were big crowds). After going back to the hotel, we got a recommendation from them for dinner, and had a nice dinner at an Italian restaurant nearby to the hotel.
On Sunday, we went to church at a local church down the street, and then went down to the Colosseum. Since we were returning back in the evening, we decided not to wait in the big line to get into the Colosseum, and grabbed some lunch and wine at a restaurant instead. Perfect.
