Mykonos holiday on the Greek Island

We went to Mykonos (one of the Greek Islands) for Tee's birthday last week and it was quite a fun time! It was the right combination of sun, relaxing, good food, friendly people, and a nice place to decompress.
When we travel, we usually prefer to stay in bed and breakfasts or rent a house if there are enough people. In this case, we stayed in the Dali Villa at the Greco Philia, which was a fantastic 8-room villa. Each unit had its own private area (ours had a small deck with an amazing ocean view plus a private jacuzzi). The complex itself has a common dining area with a full bar (all outside), plus a fresh water pool. The food was very good quality and a nice assortment. The Greco Philia is a family-owned place and all the employees and owners were great (it's a father and his two sons - say hi to Mario and Dimitri if you go there!). I felt a special connection because the family who owns it used to live near Boston on Cape Cod. Small world! The location was perfect, because it was walkable to the main beach on the island, Elia Beach. You had to drive into the main town (Chora / Mykonos Town) and that was about 20 minutes away. But the alternative was to stay near town and then have to drive to the beach, which would have been much harder. This definitely was the right option for us!
The island itself is pretty small and quiet, other than the nightlife. We did hire a small car for the week to get around, and that was a good idea. The nice thing is that there was very little humidity, so you could enjoy the sun on Mykonos without feeling all gross. (Can you tell I hate humidity?) We met a bunch of nice people on the island and were able to strike a good balance of social activities and relaxing private time. There is a lot of nightlife, given the small size of the island. There's only one main town, Mykonos Town or Chora if you're feeling particularly native. Restaurants start to fill up late for dinner (10pm at least) and the bars, shops and clubs are open until 4 or 5am.

An insider's story from the DNC last week

Tee (94.245.127.13) from London says: Hi Paola- enjoy your trip! I don't have any specific photos of the Dali villa itself. The porch off of the room is fairly private but not super big. We spent most of our time when at the villa down by the pool in the common area. On the Greco Philia website homepage, they rotate through some pictures of the pool and common area. Paola (82.99.56.47) from Brussels says: Hi KingFriday! we are going to the grecophilia at the end of august and are booked into the Dali villa. Have not found any pictures online of the porch, or the living area. Would you have any or can you point me at some online? Many thanks for your help! (posted Tuesday, August 17, 2010)
