When Troy and I first moved to Highbury / Islington (near Angel), we wanted to find a personal trainer and gym near us. We each had slightly different goals for our workouts, so it was a challenge to find a gym and trainer that met both of our needs.

We joined a local gym in Islington near our flat (the Highbury Pool). The gym was okay, but what really stood out was the personal training facility we found in Angel, inside the Business Design Centre.

In June 2006, we started what we thought would be a few training sessions with John at the Revolution Personal Training Studio in Islington, near the Angel Tube Station in N1. Revolution has a large room inside the Business Design Centre that they have converted into a private workout studio. They have a bunch of mats for stretching, a rowing machine and treadmill for warming up, and free weights, bar bells and benches for the actual workout.

One of the things we liked a lot was the personal attention and focus on individual goals – ranging from reviewing a food diary to offering informal guidance on what works and what doesn’t work, at least for them. It’s also nice to use personal trainers who are in good shape themselves! At some other places, I’ve seen personal trainers who not only are missing a six-pack, but aren’t even particularly fit. John is in great shape, practices what he preachers, and boxes. He even has a six-pack (damn him!).

We had explored some other personal training options around Islington Angel, including Dax Moy. We never actually did any training with him because the whole experience when we explored it was too surreal and polished. We had gone into his place and there was a sassy receptionist (okay, that was fine), but it almost was like we were applying to work with him, instead of him trying to gain us as customers. In comparison, John (and co-workers) at Revolution have always been direct, appreciate and focused. No fluff, just hard work and focus on results.

So in any case, what we expected to last for a few months – to help us jumpstart our training – turned into a year and a half of personal training. Troy has been working out with John three times a week and I had been more like once or twice a week. I’m trying to find a good balance between the gym, basketball and football. But it’s hard to fit it all in during busy weeks at work. But with a move to Ealing Broadway on the horizon, we don’t think we’ll be able to get to Angel to work out too often.

We’d highly recommend personal training with Revolution PTS.
