Wow, there are so many random things going on, it's hard to know where to start. The obvious stuff includes the US Presidential election. While that itself is interesting, it's particularly fun to talk about Sarah Palin. And Tiny Fey. Like how more perfect could that fit be? Saturday Night Live has been doing fantastic skits about this. The saddest part is that most of the clips didn't even need to be acted - SNL could have just played the actual Palin comments.

For example, last week's skit mocked Palin's answers during the recent Katie Couric interview. The skit was super funny - until I watched the actual interview and read the actual transcript of the real interview:

Katie Couric: "Why isn't it better, Gov. Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries; allow them to spend more and put more money into the economy instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?"

Gov. Sarah Palin: "That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, we're ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health-care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the -- it's got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health-care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans. And trade, we've got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive, scary thing. But one in five jobs being created in the trade sector today, we've got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that."

I mean - this is the Republican VP nominee! She doesn't need to be mocked - it's real! How embarrassing.

In other news, the construction at our house is done! Given that we thought it would be completed in the first week of August, it's quite exciting that it is at least finished by October 1. We did a lot of things that were called out in our inspection report when we bought the place, and then did a bunch of inside wall work to re-plaster the downstairs and paint it. Since the walls were getting redone, we also were able to do a bunch of wire manipulation, and have a great system for all the wires being hidden, allowing us to have a nice wall-mounted TV and surround sound, with no wires being visible. Now I just need to find time to sit and do nothing while watching TV ("yeah, stopping writing blog posts" comes to mind). We also had the front and back gardens cleaned up and those looks great also!

There was a creative bank robbery in the Seattle area yesterday. A robber walked into a bank and stole money. Normal so far. When he escaped, though, he ran into a local river and either swam away or used an inner tube to float away. But wait - it gets better! He was dressed in a semi-construction uniform (construction gloves, bright orange vest, dust mask, etc). To add confusion during his get away, he had posted a Help Wanted ad on Craigslist that solicited people to dress as construction workers and to show up around his get away time dressed just as he was! And about 28 people did just that! How fantastic! Note: I'm not condoning bank robberies, just his creativity.

Bailout. This is tricky. I certainly don't support bailing out private companies that got themselves into trouble. But I do understand the reality of all the trickle-down effects if a bunch of financial institutions were to fail. Like it's not too fair to a young couple starting out to lose their house because they can't remortgage when a fixed-rate expires due to no fault of their own. But on the other hand, we can't pretend to be in a free market society and jump in to help private companies when they get into trouble due to their own stupidity. They need to be accountable for that. Someone let me know when you figure it out. But it is interesting that the US House rejected the first serious bill to address this And to end back on the Palin comments, I can't wait for Thursday's VP debate! Should provide great fodder for SNL's skits on Saturday!
